How can North Carolina drivers avoid distracted driving?

On Behalf of | Jun 1, 2021 | car accidents

No matter how long you have had your license, or how confident you are in your driving skills, you must still remain alert and aware behind the wheel. This entails avoiding distracted driving behaviors at all costs.

According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, there are a number of distracted driving behaviors motorists can fall victim to. Avoiding these behaviors is your duty as a motorist, both for your safety and the safety of others.

Do not text while driving

Drivers in North Carolina are not permitted to text while operating a motor vehicle. Additionally, drivers under the age of 18 cannot use a mobile device at all, even to make a phone call. Remaining compliant with these laws prevent accidents, but also helps you avoid penalties and punishments.

Do not eat and drive

While there are no specific rules regarding eating behind the wheel, it is still a distraction. Wake up early enough to eat breakfast before you leave for the day. At lunch, take time to eat your meal or bring it back to your place of work. Eating in the car can lead to major accidents if you look away from the road, even briefly.

Strap in kids and pets

Kids and pets are extremely distracting in a vehicle. Be sure to secure pets in their carriers or restrain them via a seat belt. As for children, make sure they understand the good behavior expected of them. Get them situated with a book or tablet before you leave, and pull over in a safe location if you must attend to their needs.

Taking the above actions can help you reduce your risk of an accident, but they cannot help you avoid the actions of other drivers. In the event of an accident, seek emergency medical treatment if needed, document what occurred, and file an accident claim as soon as possible.
