What causes distracted driving?

On Behalf of | Sep 5, 2019 | car accidents

Distracted drivers in North Carolina can cause serious accidents. Nowadays, drivers have a lot of demands on their attention. It is crucial to stay focused. Safe drivers are drivers who are not distracted. One way to ensure that you drive safer is to know the contributors to distracted driving.

One of the most commonly cited distracted driving factors is the use of cell phones. Teen Safe confirms cell phone usage is the second largest factor behind distracted driving. Another major contributor, however, is adjusting the climate control or radio while driving. When you take your attention off the road, anything can happen. Passengers in the car may be a risk too. Passengers should not demand attention.

Objects or events in the vehicle can cause the driver to lose his or her focus. What you may not realize, however, is that you can be the sole cause of the distraction. The largest contributing factor to distracted driving is when the driver is lost in thought. If your mind is not on the road, then it is not in the right place. If you have worries about something else before you get behind the wheel, you should reconsider whether it is safe to drive.

Drivers may also style hair, eat, read or apply makeup while behind the wheel. The driver’s seat is not the place for multitasking. People have reported taking part in these activities while driving. In fact, about 20% of drivers report that they styled their hair while driving before.
